Shreemant Dagdusheth Halwai Ganpati Mandir is a temple devoted to Lord Ganesha (also called Ganpati). It is among the popular temples in Pune. Many devotees come to attend the daily aarti, pooja and other rituals.

The temple is managed by Shreemant Dagdusheth Halwai Sarvajanik Ganpati Trust. And it looks at its best during the annual Ganeshotsav festival when the entire temple is decorated with flowers and colourful lights for the grand celebrations.

It attracts both locals and tourists who want to witness the grandeur of the celebrations. Many celebrities and politicians, too, visit the temple and get blessings from the lord.

The temple trust also works towards development of orphanages and old-age homes. Social welfare activities like organising medical camps, managing ambulance services, and setting up learning facilities are also carried out.

History of Shreemant Dagdusheth Halwai Ganpati Mandir

This Ganpati Temple was built in the late 1800s by Dagdusheth Halwai, a famous sweet maker in the region. He and his wife lost their sons to a plague epidemic. That was when their guru advised them to build a temple devoted to Lord Ganesha.

He had a flourishing business, and the original sweets shop still exists as Dagdusheth Halwai Sweets near Datta Mandir in Pune.

As they grew old, Govindsheth, Dagdusheth’s nephew, handled all the arrangements for the festivities. National leaders like Lokmanya Tilak and Bhausaheb Rangari, who were friends with him, also played a role in making this temple a grand place for celebrations. People like Shri Tatyasaheb Godse and other founding trustees also participated.

Later, when donors and devotees contributed towards the temple fund, they started taking part in various activities for social and cultural development.

Daily aarti of Lord Ganesha and other rituals are worth attending. The 7.5 feet tall Ganesha idol is lavishly adorned with gold. Devotees offer coconuts to get the blessings. Huge amounts of gold and money are also offered from time to time.

You can also be a part of the festivals celebrated in the temple. Ganeshotsav is the most important among them, which is celebrated around August-September. Ganeshotsav is a 10-day festival, during which the temple is decorated with stripes of colourful lights and flowers.

The temple trust also organises various cultural activities like music concerts, bhajans and Atharvasheersh recitations regularly.
